You only need page 4 of a 60-page report, or a scanned stack of receipts has landed in one giant PDF. Sending the whole thing is awkward, and some upload forms will not even accept it.
Splitting fixes this. You keep the pages you need, in as many files as you need, and the original stays untouched.
In this guide I'll show you how to split a PDF with the free PDF Splitter, explain the four split modes, and help you pick the right one for your file.
| Quick answerTo split a PDF, open a free PDF splitter, upload your file and choose a split mode: pick single pages, split every page into its own file, enter page ranges such as 1-3, 4-6, or cut it into equal parts. Click Split, then download the new PDFs one by one or all together. |
Why split a PDF?
Splitting a PDF lets you share, upload or store only the pages that matter. It is useful any time one file holds several documents, or when a file is too long for the person or form receiving it.
| Situation | Best split mode |
|---|---|
| Send one chapter or invoice from a long file | Extract selected |
| Turn a scanned stack of receipts into one file per receipt | Every page |
| Separate a contract, its appendix and its signature page | By ranges |
| Break a large textbook into smaller parts for email | Equal parts |
| Upload only the ID page or certificate a form asks for | Extract selected |
The four ways to split a PDF
The PDF Splitter on ilovetoolbox has four split modes, and each one gives you a different set of files. Here is what each mode does, using a 10-page PDF as the example:
| Split mode | What it does | Result for a 10-page PDF |
|---|---|---|
| Extract selected | Saves only the pages you tick into one new PDF | 1 file with your chosen pages |
| Every page | Saves each page as its own PDF | 10 single-page files |
| By ranges | Each range you type, such as 1-3, 4-6, 7, becomes one PDF | 3 files for that example |
| Equal parts | Cuts the document into the number of parts you choose | 2 parts of 5 pages each |
The tool shows a live count, such as "Will create 10 files", before you split. That makes it easy to check the result before you download anything.
How to split a PDF online (step by step)
You can split a PDF in your browser in under a minute, with no sign-up and no watermark. These steps match what the tool shows on screen:
- 1.Open the free PDF Splitter on ilovetoolbox.
- 2.Click Browse files, or drag and drop your PDF into the upload box. All pages load as thumbnails.
- 3.Under Split mode, choose Extract selected, Every page, By ranges or Equal parts.
- 4.Pick your pages: tick them, type ranges such as 1-3, 4-6, 7, or enter the number of parts.
- 5.Change the Output file name if you want, then check the file count shown under it.
- 6.Click Split.
- 7.Download your new PDFs one by one, or click Download all.
| From my test: I split a 10-page test PDF with Every page mode. The tool listed 10 files, named test-10-pages-01.pdf to test-10-pages-10.pdf, with a Download all button underneath. |
The tool page says your PDF is split in your browser. For full details on how files are handled, read our privacy policy.
How to split a PDF into separate pages
To split a PDF into separate pages, choose Every page mode. Each page becomes its own PDF, and the files are numbered in page order so they stay easy to sort.
Before you split, the Pages panel lets you drag thumbnails to reorder them, rotate a sideways scan, or remove a blank page. Fixing these first saves you from editing ten separate files later.
If you only need a handful of pages in one file, use Extract selected instead. The free PDF Extract Pages tool does the same job if you prefer a tool built just for picking pages.
| Pro tip: Rename the output before you split. A name like invoice-march gives you invoice-march-01.pdf, invoice-march-02.pdf and so on, which is much easier to find later than a scanner's default name. |
Split, extract or organize: which tool do you need?
Use a splitter when you want several output files, and a page tool when you want one cleaned-up file. This quick comparison helps you choose:
| Tool | Use it when you want to | Output |
|---|---|---|
| PDF Splitter | Break one PDF into several files | One or more PDFs |
| PDF Extract Pages | Keep only selected pages | One new PDF |
| PDF Organize | Reorder, rotate or delete pages | One edited PDF |
| Merge PDF | Join several PDFs back together | One combined PDF |
Other ways to split a PDF on your computer
On a Mac, Preview can make a new PDF from some pages without any extra software. Open the PDF, choose View > Thumbnails, then drag the pages you want from the sidebar onto your desktop.
Apple's Preview guide confirms that dragging thumbnails to the desktop creates a new PDF. It works well for a page or two, but splitting a long file into many parts is quicker with an online splitter.
Desktop PDF editors such as Adobe Acrobat can also split files, but they usually need a paid plan or an install. For occasional jobs, a browser tool on any device is the simpler route.
Tips for a clean split
- Check page numbers in the viewer, not the printed footer. A cover or contents page can make printed numbers differ from the real page order.
- Keep the original PDF. Splitting creates new files and leaves your original as it was, so you can always split it again.
- Expect interactive extras to vary. Bookmarks, links and form fields may not carry over to every split file, so check them if you rely on them.
- Compress large parts afterwards. If a split file is still too big to email, shrink it with Compress PDF. My guide on how to compress a PDF without losing quality explains which level to pick.
| Password-protected files: If a PDF is locked with a password, you will need that password before you can split it. Only split documents you own or have permission to edit. |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using Every page when you need one file: you end up with dozens of files to merge again.
- Typing overlapping ranges: 1-5 and 4-8 both include pages 4 and 5, so those pages appear twice.
- Skipping the file count: the "Will create" line tells you instantly if a range is wrong.
- Leaving the default file name: numbered files with a vague name are hard to find later.
- Forgetting to fix rotation first: a sideways page stays sideways in every file it lands in.
Final thoughts
Splitting a PDF is mostly about choosing the right mode. Use Extract selected for a few pages, Every page for one file per page, By ranges for documents with clear sections, and Equal parts for very long files.
Ready to try it? Open the free PDF Splitter, drop in your PDF, choose a split mode and download your new files in a few seconds for most documents.

Frequently asked questions
Yes. The PDF Splitter is free to use, needs no sign-up and adds no watermark to your split files. You can split by selected pages, every page, page ranges or equal parts. Very large PDFs can take longer to split, especially on a phone.
No. Splitting copies the existing pages into new files without re-compressing them, so text, images and layout look the same as in the original. File sizes change only because each new file holds fewer pages. Your original PDF is not changed at all.
Yes. The upload box accepts one or more PDFs, and you can add files with the Add PDFs button. The tool works with PDF files only, so convert Word documents or images to PDF first. Password-protected PDFs need their password before they can be split.
Yes. The PDF Splitter works in mobile browsers such as Chrome and Safari on Android and iPhone, with no app to install. Choose your PDF from the Files app, pick a split mode and download the results. Long PDFs usually split faster on a computer.
Choose Extract selected for a few pages in one file, and Every page when each page should become its own PDF. Use By ranges, such as 1-3, 4-6, for documents with clear sections, and Equal parts to cut a long file into a set number of smaller files.
